The Arts Advocacy Group (AAG) is a leadership and advocacy program for artists and art enthusiasts at KSU. AAG seeks to assist students in developing necessary knowledge and skills, which are instrumental in advocating for the arts, by providing rich arts/cultural workshops, service opportunities, and advocacy experiences at the local, state, and federal levels.
Art, Power, & Civil Rights
In fall 2008, AAG will debut its most enriching program experience to date, entitled; "Art, Power, and Civil Rights." Participants will develop their personal leadership and advocacy skills by taking a journey through the art that was produced by the movement.
Together, we will begin in 1939 where we will discover how film and music captured two distinct Americas; one that white Americans saw, and the second that African-Americans experienced. Over the course of the year we will visit the preceding decades and find ourselves strangely examining our own time. We will have the opportunity hear the rhythmic souls of Coltrane and Holiday, meet with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and sing the Freedom Songs that compelled the Movement. The art will provide the vehicle in which we will discover ourselves, develop our own leadership and advocacy skills, and come to know exemplary leaders who in time of struggle persevered.
